Is more of a sound level thing, coupled with overclocking. I think the main reason it got started what that our desktops, as processors became faster and thus hotter, were starting to sound like wind machines. So somebody took the next step and removed the fans. The extra cooling capacity was then utilized by overclocking. At least thats the way I look at it.
