I always scrape that pad off the bottom of my heatsinks, and spread a thin layer of goo on there.

The trick ot it tho, is keep it thin. That goo actually transfers heat slower than air does. However, it does it _evenly_! You want hte heatsink to touch the cpu as much as possible, and that goo to fill in gaps caused by inconcistancies in the machining process..

CPU/Motherbaord/Memory is the big part of hte comptuer. I usually upgrade that and oconsider it "a new computer". Be sure to check your power supply to make sure it can handle the higher stuff too.
