It happened that in a womb two twin brothers where born. The weeks passed and the boys grew. And in the same degree as their consciousness grew, their joy increased:
"Say, isn't it great, that we were conceived?
Isn't it wonderful, that we're alive?"
The twins began to discover the world. But when they found the umbilical cord, which connected them with their mother and gave them nutrition, there they sang out of joy:
"How great is the love of our mother, that she shares her own life with us!"
As the weeks passed and finally became months, they suddenly noticed, how much they had changed.
"What is that supposed to mean?" one of the twins asked the other.
"That means nothing else" answered the other "as that our stay in this world will be finished soon."
"But I don't want to go" said the other "I want to stay here forever."
"We have no choice" replied the other "but maybe there's a life after birth."
"How could that be?" asked the first one in doubt "We will loose our cord of life and how are we supposed to live without it? And, besides, others have left the womb before us and noone of them returned to tell us about a life after death. - No, the birth is the end!"
So one of them fell in deep sorrow and said: "When conception ends with birth what sense is then living in the womb? It is senseless! - Maybe there's no mother behind everything."
"But she has to exist" the other protested "how could we have come here otherwise? And how could we keep on living?"
"Have you ever seen our mother?" asked the first. "Maybe she just lives in our imagination. We have made her up, because we can understand our lives in a better way through her!"
And thus the last days in the womb of the mother were filled with a lot of questions and a lot of fear. Finally the moment of birth came.
As the twins left their world, they opened their eyes.
-
They screamed.
What they saw, surpassed their wildest dreams.
(Note: "Schoß" normally translates to "lap", but in former times it has also been used to describe the womb as it was considered impolite to say the latter.) |
