| the purposes of feeding back the by-products is to cut waste from slaughter and to save money. If it's claws, beaks and feathers being fed to chickens, their main use would probably be as a source of fiber in the diet--I'm fairly certain that chickens can't digest those proteins. And I can think of a lot of other cheap sources of fiber that wouldn't potentially carry chicken diseases, so I'd be surprised anyone would do that. As far as forbidding it in chickens? I'm not in the poultry industry, so I haven't heard about such a legal restriction, but in light of the Mad Cow situation, I'm sure it's at least been/being very carefully looked into. |
