What if, the government changed the laws, so that there was no legal marriage, but the legal privileges and obligations of marriage were applied to a different sort of contract, say a 'domestic partnership'. I've always found it odd, that there is a legal entity called 'marriage', when marriage is primarily a religious concept, and church and state are supposed to be separated.
