right on, naruki... and... by Thalas_shaya 2002-10-14 17:44:29
In response to the comment on 'fornication'... I know that bath-houses are part of the gay male culture. But as Naruki pointed out, it's also part of the straight culture. Hello, prostitution, singles bars, and swinger parties! Furthermore, bath-houses are not the sum total of the gay lifestyle.

The people arguing in legal and civil discussions that the gay lifestyle is "equivalent" are not saying that of the party/drug/random sex scene. That promiscuous life (whether the participants are gay or straight) is not on par with the commitment that my/your grandparents held sacred through marriage for 50 years.

I'm having a commitment ceremony next year to celebrate my relationship with my partner. She's my soul-mate and life partner, but if either of us were hospitalized, we'd have no rights to make medical decisions for each other or to even visit each other. If she were killed, I could not sue for wrongful death in civil court, because I'm not her wife. And I can't be. The federal government has stated that marriage is a state that exists only between a man and a woman. We can't combine our car insurance policies, or health insurance policies. Unless I specifically provide so in my will, she won't inherit the house we jointly own and pay for, because we're not married.

We live the moral equivalent of a married life. But we are 'fornicators' because modern Christianity and civil society prohibits us from marriage. Take a peek at the book "Same Sex Unions in Pre-Modern Europe" by John Boswell for an interesting view of how those unions came to be forbidden.
