for people who don't like the "interpreting and equivocating" arguments... i have the "reason" argument. keep in mind, this is an argument targeted to God-Awed (thanks, skeptic) people who are trying to say that homosexuality is forbidden by Christianity. i usually lose them before i get to the conclusion because they can't or won't believe one of the supporting arguments... but here it is, as explained to me in my coming-out days by my dear friend Lindsay.
the (historically stable) gay portion of the population is a solid 10%. the percentage expressing homosexuality as a lifestyle varies up and down depending on the social acceptability. but for the sake of having a number, i'll settle on 10% of the population is gay (or on the gay side of bisexual).
the best current understanding of sexual orientation explains it as something determined mostly genetically, although upbringing can (and does) affect it. believe me, nobody who practices Christianity just wakes up one morning and CHOOSES to be homosexual. you're born with it. (this is where i lose most people)
so now you've got a solid 10% of the population (and by inference, 10% of the Christian sample of the population) gay and it's beyond their control to be so. and because they're Christian, it's their belief that they are gay because that's the way God made them.
I've never heard or read any teaching of Christianity that would indicate God hardwires you to love who you love and then turns around and tells you that if you do, you'll burn in hell. That's just not in the character of the Christian God.
no matter what form of deity one believes or disbelieves, I don't know anyone who thinks their deity would create 10% of the population in such a way that they cannot love and be loved within the fold of that deity's worshippers... |
