Basically, human understanding has been evolving along with the major intellectual movements of our time. We no longer accept the teachings of say, the 1800's, when it was popularly accepted fact that the Bible justified (demanded, even) the enslavement of African peoples.
The writings of intellectuals from history inform my perspective on my life today, but certainly don't dictate my moral code.
Your comment on condoms is interesting, because the Roman Catholic church is really the only one left clinging to a lot of those "spirit of the law" kinds of teachings. According to them, sex is strictly for procreation within marriage, and that's part of their argument against homosexuality and that's why they prohibit the use of artificial means of birth control. That's why when I have "this" discussion with Catholics, I usually have to go forward in time from the Bible and explain how Pope Gregory (I think he's the one) had the King James translation altered and used his "infallible" position as pope to begin an official anti-gay platform within the Church from which we get a lot of modern Christianity's bias.
An interesting and related "quirk" is that the Protestant denominations have thrown out the prohibitions on birth control and remarrying after divorce, but still stick to the teachings on homosexuality. (Catholics may only remarry if they obtain an annulment. Disagreement over that tenet of the faith is the basis of the founding of the Anglican church.) |
