... it is the other 'way round; i.e., that there never was such a person as Osama bin Laden; that both he and Al Qaeda are myths made up by the US government; that the terrorist attacks were entirely staged by 'the Establishment' to spread FUD, with the intent of eventually using it to impose a Pax Americana on the entire world.
While I must admit that I cannot put it past either the current Administration or it's predecessors to do something like that (I trust human beings to be as malicious as possible at all times, including myself), I seriously doubt that they'd have the brains or the resources neccessary to pull it off. This goes beyond media control; you'd have to manipulate people's real world experiences. At that point, one might as well declare that it is 70 AD and were all trapped in Black Iron Prison; PKD's paranoia made at least as much sense.
