You can prove almost anything using words from the Bible, if you're willing to take things out of context. And the meaning of "To'evah" certainly has changed over the years. A thematic analysis WILL tell you the ancient Hebrews ascribed almost magic power to semen and to blood. The prevailing medical knowledge viewed blood as THE lifeforce. Wasting blood was wasting your own life. And semen was thought to be full of little baby seeds. Spilling it or wasting it was like throwing babies on the ground. That concept of not "wasting" the sex act on recreation is part of the rationale behind the Catholic prohibitions of birth control and masturbation. But that's only part of the Christian indictment of homosexuals.
The original post wasn't really intended for skeptics. :) It was meant as a counter-argument to what pro-gay Christians often refer to as the "clobber passages". When your very well-meaning Christian family decides to sit you down and tell you why you're going to hell and why they very devoutly believe you need to go to "straight summer camp" and be cured of your gayness, these are the verses they'll quote to you. There are a few more, and most of the links I have on the subject are devoted to a point-by-point rebuttal of all the clobber passages in their various translations and interpretations.
Various bad interpretations (taken out of context or incorrectly translated) of Bible verses have been used throughout the years to condone anti-Semitism and slavery, among other evils. I like to think the interpretations I stick to use the most correct historical and linguistic contexts available, but I'm not a Bible scholar and I only know what I know because I read someone else's writings. I know waaaay too much detail about this particular subject, because I've had to learn it for self-defense.
I find remarkably few skeptics, atheists, agnostics, pagans, etc. who hate me (or my 'sin', as Christians will tell you it's not the sinner they hate) on principle. Usually it comes from people who've had their heads stuffed full of cotton by someone else's translation of the Bible. |
