if it's not a text based most will brush it off as spam...

Though if you have to go with graphics go with earth tones or soft blues or greens. Reasoning is it's not bright/in your face when your tired, etc and don't feel like "perky." Also overly perky is irritating. I'd keep it simple graphically.

For the subject line I suggest being very careful. Mail filters and things that are commonly said in spam and all... I suggest saying "Important notice from <insert company name>. Note this isn't spam." Then in the letter at the bottom stick a disclaimer saying the targeted mailing is based on some agreement with your company and please contact them if they have a complaint or question.(then give contact details) Then add this isn't part of an opt-in scheme or like spam, mlm, mass mailing schemes. That it's simply an offer your company wanted to make clients.
