not about to use it for self-defense or home protection.

A major portion of safety is being aware of what's behind your target, and .50 cal tends to go farther than you can see in urgan ops. Bit of overkill. (Yeah, I know you seem to be aware of this.)

Problem with SMG's like the Uzi and Mac-10/11 is their design and the possibility of the run-away gun syndrome. H&K uses a locking breach which not only makes that impossible but as the receiver isn't traveling the length of the gun, it's much more accurate.
