One side is not able to understand the other, because we are talking about two totally different systems of values.
I wrote about this in a thread about a week ago. Thing is, people have different systems of values. Yours and mine declare life to be sacred. We believe that in situations of religion vs. life, it's life that wins.
Other people think differently. They hold that life is the possession of a deity. That deity alone decides whether or not life has any value. If the decrees of the deity, as they interpret the books, require some lives to be disposed of, then that has to be so.
Why? Well, their reasoning is that if the deity created the world, and created man for its own purposes, and we are all that deity's belongings, then it is the deity's right to decide what will happen to its playthings.
You call that insane? I don't. It's a totally rational point of view, given the premises. But I will fight the people who hold this view, because there is nothing else for me to do but to fight for the values that I believe in.
So there will always be war. And it is a huge mistake to call the people on the other side "insane". It's both incorrect from the point of view of pure Psychiatry, and dangerous in terms of your own values (i.e. you de-humanize people). |
