There are plenty of examples of religious finatics killing themselves over the past thirty years. We've seem on numerous occations, people willing to sacrifice their lives for their belief in a divine being or beings. What do you think the members of Heaven's Gate would have done if they had be told that the only way to get yo the "Mother Ship" was to kill a non member? Religious finatics have existed thoughout the human history. There is very little difference between Islamic, Christian, Jewish or any other extremist group. The diety may be different, but the rheteric and actions are not.
