to really understand how these things work..... I've forgotten most of my college stats, but it is quite normal for pollsters to use a base of about 1000; as long as those 1000 are carefully chosen to fairly represent the population as a whole. Increasing the number to 2000 or even 5000 does not drastically increase accuracy, but it does drastically increase the cost........
