apparently it's common enough to have a stupidly easy fix here

Yea, slackware does not install the sound card for you. The only thing it does install is the nic (unless you have a good hardware modem). Edit your /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file. Look for the sound card section, and remove the # infront of the /sbin/modprobe emu10k1 line. Exit and save. at the command line, type /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and then you should have sound. (no need to reboot). If its an older card (or it doesn't work for some reason) Try the other soundblaster one (for the pro/16 model). That should work.
