But I think RedHat was the first Linux distribution to use that layout. I think it originated with *BSD. Mandrake, which was originally based on RedHat only compiled with the Pentium optimizaations so no 386 or 486 support, also uses the sysconfig directory and I still haven't found all of the config files the drak tools change.

The only three distros I've used are Slackware, Mandrake and RedHat so I can't comment on the others. Slackware uses a very simple SysV type of setup. All of the configs are contained in the rc files and all of the rc files are in one directory (/etc/rc.d). You are expected to vi (or emacs or pico) the scripts to get things to work.
