I actually thought of it right after I posted but couldn't be bothered to correct it. And you can configure which terminal X starts on if you really want to.

In your case, with X non-functional I'd be tempted to reconfigure the box to allow more virtual terminals. It defaults to 1-6 but there's no reason you can't crank it up to 11 or 12. ;-)
