First of all, thanks for finally including the details that you carelessly omitted the first two times around. It sounds like it was indeed necessary to hear the info you mentioned.
However, what you first indicated was tantamount to gossipping about other employees with the boss - and that would be useful evidence in a suit against the company if one of them missed on a promotion or something similar.
Being a member of management is different from being considered to join the ranks. If you are in competition with other coworkers for a promotion and you get info about their mistakes, that would not be ethical. I'm not doubting that such actually happens "the real world", but happening doesn't make it right.
Whatever you hear while doing your job is fine. But going behind closed doors with someone's manager and learning what he knows is entirely different. And, unless you are in a need-to-know capacity (which you finally indicated you were), it's confidential information. |
