My unlawyerly-like opinion is that, unless you had responsibility for those coworkers advancement, you had no right to hear what customers said about them. It may not be _your_ fault - but the manager who told you would certainly be responsible.

Simply being "groomed for management" is no excuse for being privvy to confidential info. Do you know their salaries? I don't know, but my guess is that you don't. Knowing their "standing" is potentially more damaging to them than knowing their salaries, though.

And yes, your conclusions about Dippy were incredibly arrogant. In that, at least, I am an expert. ;-)
