past vs. passed by OddParity 2002-10-03 08:16:25
'Past' is an adjective which means beyond, whether in time or space. Examples: "The time is five minutes past four o'clock" and "The prisoner longed for the free world past the razor wire and guard towers.

'Past' is also a noun or adjective meaning any time before the present. Example: "The old man rarely spoke of the deeds of his youth; he preferred to leave his past behind him."

'Passed' is a verb which means traveled beyond. Example: "We passed the bank on our way to the school."

As you see, the concepts are related, but not identical. 'Past' emphasizes the location, while 'Passed' emphasizes the action of traveling and the path traveled.
