The "@" means "Op" not "mod" by DaNutBall2002-09-29 16:10:57
yes I know but to people that aren't by Arienadean 2002-09-29 16:23:45
used to the terms it means about the same... ie they can kick your butt outta there if you get out of line(re the channel... however ircops can kick you right off the network they get peeved enough).

Also I was an op on several channels and for many years spanning at least 4 or 5 networks.(danutball was an op briefly in at least one channel I know of... so should know ops are comparable to message board moderators in what they do... ie help newbies/people with questions if they can and moderate/deal with problematic people) And bots are usually owned by the channel owner, server or a channel op. Several channels have them to log activity(to deal with problem people later or like... they rarely log convos as it takes up alot of space after awhile and can be a hassle). Bots since they may have some admin ability that the channel ops use typically are opped.(however if they have admin functions they are usually password protected or will only accept them from specific people). Bots however also can be playful and many will play games(scrabble, black jack, word games, etc). You can ask if a very quiet person with a "@" by their name is a bot or a operator. Usually the op wont be offended... Because yes sometimes ops will be busy and get quiet.(though they might have programs to beep on their name or highlight their name when mentioned)
