I've been an op for a few years now and run into several... Seem to have engineers, computer dudes, electrical, and like in ham radio ops... And also various other technicians and things. Also people involved in emergency services or emergency prep stuff often use radios for work and have ones at home for a hobby.
For me the attraction was after seeing some movies on it... besides that some of my acestors did something notable in history... not that we paid that much attention though it is neat.(they either disowned my branch of the family or we their branch but anyhoo...) My grandfather who I was very close to held the world record for fastest sending and recieving of morse code(it was around the time of WWI). He knew several up and commers (marconi I think might of been one or was it tesla... some old dude from his time period. My dads dead now so I can't confirm that with him ... not sure if my mom remembers but I know I was told he knew some of those people as friends). Also my grandfather was one of the first in canada and bc for that matter with a license broadcasting. As well his wife(my grandma of course) had it in her family sort of as well.(her father or grandfather was the steamship captain that laid the first transatlantic cables so she had peices of it til she died with plaques on them).
Anyways my grandparents lived with us when I was younger. I'd see the cable bits, hear the stories, saw my grandpa's gear and heard him make calls... So I have my license for nostalgia and I suppose to carry on the tradition. I'm the only one in my family(including extended) to my knowledge who has a ham radio license.(not that I use it that much... also makes me a back up for emerg services if some disaster ever happens... ie they'll use me as a communications officer) |
