Depending on my mood it's either coloured or wallpapered. But in windows I need it set a certain colour usually so that the icons don't look yuck on the background.(in linux they are just transparent so background doesn't matter necisarily) I perfer though darker backgrounds no matter what it is or it can bother me visually.(I tend to actually dislike bright white backgrounds in my browsers for that reason which is why sometimes I force it to a dark background, etc)
