Resolution is up on Tuesday to grant an extension to indy Net radio stations (well, in the US) on paying the extortion royalty fees the CARP decided on, until the appeals court makes a decision.
If the motion fails, its likely most net radio stations won't make it to the appeal decision. Still the ones outside the US, but there will be a lot of silence til then.
Whats interesting, is that radio broadcasters pay 3% to the composer of the music (as opposed to the label or the artist, though one of them may be the composer), and you can tape it just fine, yet they think that a sub-128 bit datastream (sub CD-quality) is enough to warrant much higher fees--to the copywrite holder--simply because "its digital data, so its eeevil and supports piracy in the end."
Call your Congressman, let him know to give the lil guys a break. Most of them didn't even get a say in the CARP--it was the big broadcasters who simulcast who sent input on the "fair" rates...fair for them, not quite so much on the independants. |
