Upgrading a system by diGriz 2002-09-26 22:55:09
A progress report...

A few days ago I removed a SCSI CD-ROM drive (BTW: who wants a Plextor UltraPlex with 10 caddies?) and replaced it with an ATAPI DVD drive. Windows 98SE recognized it at once. So far, so good.

Then I started Linux. Drivers were loaded (as seen on the start screen), but when I tried to access the drive, the system told me, that there was no media in the drive. Strange.

Ok, so I called a good friend of mine (the handbook wasn't helpful). He told me, that there is a way to install my CD-RW burner as a [...deleted because complicated...]. So I searched the entire internet for this, but no one ever seemed to exchange a SCSI CD-ROM drive with a ATAPI drive.

Back to the basics. A squinty look in /dev revealed this entry: cdrom -> /dev/sr0. Could it be...? I man-ed (what a verb) for the link command, and re-linked that entry to its new destination /dev/hdd, and it worked!! (Not a third exclamation mark, as it is a sure sign of insanity *;) )

Now a question to all Linux-UFies: Was that the only way, or is there a better and easier solution to this problem? I use SuSE 8.0 (I don't want to hear remarks like "Use <what-ever> Lunix, that's better")

Best regards (and so on and so on and so on)
