I won't usually buy a CD unless I've heard a few tracks for awhile and know I like it. (Unless I know I like the group from previous experience.) Rarely will I buy it just hearing one track (though it's happened for better or worse). Allowing them on MP3's just quickens things up, rather than waiting for the third single to be released. I'm not rich, and my likes aren't narrow in the least. (I also tend to be a completist if I really like someone...which has lead to things like buying the whole Hendrix and SRV catalogue's within a month or two) But I can't really sympathize with someone who fills hard drives with music, listens often and enjoys without supporting.
Ironically I found User Friendly through computer gear (I think I was buying DeCSS related T-shirts and the item on the first book looked interestingly enough.) Read the book, enjoyed it, bought the other three, and found the website while awaiting the shipment. (back in May). After a month, I became a paying member. (Also bought a Dust puppy)
Yes the internet should be free, but if someone's offering their work and asks for a donation of sorts to help them continue, and I like the work, I'll sure as hell do what I can. I'm no leech ;>
I don't click ads though, although that could be because I don't see them. :X |
