Basically, the 'smb' protocol is a Windows protocol, not something dreamed up by the samba team. You don't need Samba on your local linux workstation, you just need to connect to a remotely shared printer on the Windows machine.
Once that is added there, try "lpr example.txt". It should see the printer listed in /etc/printcap and try to send a file to it.
If you are running redhat or a variant, run 'printtool' to see a nice interface to editing /etc/printcap.
