Go into search, select "Change Preferences" and select "Without an animated Screen character."
As for the speed issue; to just search the file names (and not all of the content), choose "Change Preferences," then the "Change files and folders search behavior" and select "Advanced - includes options to manually enter search criteria. Recommended for advanced users only." This will give you the option of just searching the file names, as well as being able to use pattern matching (*, ?, etc.).
As for the offline search problem, I haven't seen that yet, but my computer is permanantly online. Maybe trying these will fix that, or maybe it won't.
