Who needs a bloated slow multimedia GUI? Blackbox is just enough for me. I can move the windows around with mouse and I have a menu from where I can get a new xterm and, occasionally, some other program like xcalc. That's everything I need. I might even switch to not using GUI at all if I wasn't making a 3d game... Kind of hard to make that without graphics.
