Back then the hard disk were smaller, ok, but if you change from 140 kB disks (single sided, single density, Apple //e), then a 30 MB hard disk really is large. Since then I use a small note book, some sort of computer diary (on paper, doesn't need any voltage). In this little booklet I write down the configuration (even BIOS), the effects of it, the partitions, file systems, and even user names and passwords. Ever lost password of root? A friend of mine did. You may put it into the PC case (towers are great :) ) as well as the manual of the main board. You'll never gonna loose them this way.
