Defamation of Zone Labs by mikehobson 2002-08-26 18:55:55
Freakazoid, you claim Zone Alarm was 'phoning home', in other words you assert that Zone Alarm itself is *spyware*.

After diligent online search, I cannot find one single security or privacy site making this claim of Zone Alarm acting as spyware - you are the *only* person I have ever seen make this claim.

It has not escaped my notice that you have failed to provide any details as to which version of Zone Alarm, what IPs, ports or the content in these alleged outbound packets.

This is a very serious allegation, in fact it amounts to defamation of Zone Labs and could seriously harm their business being published on such a widely read forum as this. How do you intend to back up this assertion, if they haul you into civil court for it?

Additionally, your claim that Zone Alarm cannot be configured to allow pings through is blatantly false, since my (registered) Zone Alarm Pro version 3.0 on this machine is configured to permit pinging at this very instant as I am typing this. You control this by customizing the security level for the Internet Zone. I was able to do this with even the freeware version of Zone Alarm when I first got it over a year ago.

Zone Alarm does DNS reverse lookups and whois queries as part of it's normal operation - the attacker identification feature.

So, perhaps a person who is not competent enough to configure such a simple program is also not competent enough to correctly interpret packet sniffer logs? Or perhaps someone has a hidden motive for publically smearing one of the finest pieces of security software available for Windows?

How shall we tell?

Michael A. Hobson
