I've been told that in XP the CD playback from the drive direct to soundcard has been disabled by default, you need to demod it through the processor (allowing for possible future DMCA compliance-checking). This sounds to me like FUD, but buried deep in the options of WMP (Tools->Options->Devices tab->Properties->Audio tab) there is a radio button for "digital playback" which defaults to checked...
