Aside from the rather spiritual leanings of the author there are some good points worthy of discussion. (Mind you I am not saying that the spiritual side of things is bunk, just that it is next to impossible to have any real discussion on the topic without looking like an idiot to the other side.)
I tend agree with the author in that there really are people who could be qualified as vampiric. They are the ones who always have to be the center of attention and are very good at doing just that. Maybe calling them social vampires would be better terminology, less prone to being dismissed outright. As the article points out some of them are quite disruptive and tend to have a strong negative impact on those around them. Others learn to respect their ability to dominate a social situation and become powerful leaders and guides. The author is attributing the persistence of the Vampire mythos to the fact that there are such people who do 'feed' off of those around them. The question then becomes, does the existence of such individuals explain why the legend of Vampires is such a persistent one, or is there some other more compelling reason?
Another question this raises is how many people would, given my interpretation, qualify themselves as vampires? ( Just curious really. ) |
