The DOTD (Debate of the Day) by slayer2002-08-26 04:43:33
Minimum ages and maturity by cristobal 2002-08-26 08:54:54
The laws governing the age at which people are allowed to perform certain acts are in many cases quite arbritary. I think that my sister, who is twelve, should be legally allowed to anything from driving to working to drinking and it should be up to our parents to educate and guide her (obviously for the driving aspect she would also have to pass the necessary written and road tests). However my sister is very mature and she has two parents that are loving yet very firm.

Now if the person is a little less mature and/or the parents are less than adequate role models, both of which are often true, it is very dangerous to give them the legal right to perform acts which could endanger them or others.

Given this scenario the government puts laws in place to create a best case scenario age to perform these acts, i.e. at what age are most people mature enough to perform said act. In many cases these ages have no real justification e.g. drinking age is 21 in Michigan, 19 across the border in Ontario and 18 in most (if not all) of the rest of Canada.

Since there is no fair way to determine who is mature enough and who is not it makes sense to level the age based constraints in place, although they should be lowered in some cases (the drinking age of 21 being a prime example).

Just my contribution to this small debate.
