While you can't turn a child under a certain age out on the street, you can hand them over to the state with just the clothes on their back and relinquish all responsibility.
Very few individuals are ever "self sufficient", and that number is actually decreasing as the government attempts to integrate everything and everybody. And I wouldn't dare try to define what constitutes a "contributing member of society." Does the child's innocent question about the nature of war count as a contribution? If it does, then don't they have a right to make their own decisions? Does the whitetrash who lives on welfare, consumes alcohol and cable, and treats his wife like garbage contribute to society? Why does he have the right to vote, drink, have sex, etc?
