As much as I like the idea myself, I know that most people below a certain age are irresponsible and downright stupid when it comes to alcohol. nd you cannot assume that all seven year-olds know that difference you talk about as well as your sister - there are many irresponsible parents who won't talk to their children about the danger of being forced to do something they don't agree to (some of them are pedophiliacs themselves). Don't you think the children of those people should be as safe as your sister?
What I'll agree to is that some of them should be lowered a bit. Here in Germany, the drinking age for beer and wine is 16 (18 for "harder" drinks). I regard that as a good guideline, and differentiating between the two levels of "power" strikes me as an especially good idea. Consider me prude if you like, but I think 15-16 makes a good age of consent - you can assume some level of responsibility at that age. |
