Most adults don't grasp the concept of consequences from sex until their first STD or trip to family planning, from smoking until they get that first lung removed, and drinking until the first dialysis treatment.They don't grasp the consequences of chasing a career until they're old and family-less. Part of the human condition is not grasping consequences.
