Army Basic Training was that way for my brother. Get up at 5AM, everyone had to be showered by 5:10AM, and standing on hte parade ground at 5:15AM, and hte drill instructor would meet them around 6AM.
However, the DI would be watching at 5AM to make sure hte lights came on in the bunkhouse. If they did not, he paid a visit. If people weren't filing out hte door at 5:10, he paid a visit. If they weren't standing out there at 5:15, fully dressed and at attention waiting for orders, he paid a visit. Obviously, if all went well, you stood there and waited until the DI got bored and paid a visit anyways :)
One of his DI's almost got killed. One of hte guys in his platoon was training for hte Olympics for a long time, in the discus. So when they threw hand grenades, he tried to do it the same way... The result was a grenade that goes up rather than out... Well they used dummy grenades, and he eventually broke hte habit. But one day came when they used live grenades and they had to blow a tire apart on teh otherside of a wall. He was so nervous he went back to his old habits.. Grenade went straight up, DI yelled obscenities, chucked hte dude out of hte fox hole, jumped out and ontop of him, and once hte foxhole was sufficiently bigger from the explosion, the DI punched him silly a few times and walked off =)
