Interesting points. I guess the point of view I was taking was that regardless of whether his original intentions were good or bad, it doesn't change the fact (or justify the fact) that this will hurt his child more than help her.
But the thought that this could be at its root not an attempt to brace the girl not against the brainwashing of the school system (which as we've discussed is in this particular case really pretty non-threatening when compared to greater influences), but against the brainwashing of her other parent is interesting, and really hadn't occurred to me.
I suppose if - regardless of the outcome of the case - the daughter ends up considering issues beyond the pledge (and which the pledge itself certainly doesn't lead to by default) which without the battle she wouldn't have ever questioned, then yes, while I still don't think he's really justified in dragging her into this, that could be a positive outcome.
As far as consulting with the children goes - well, yeah, I guess never. It was more the idea that even if he wins the child loses so much and gains so little that was forming the base of my annoyance with the man. |
