Part of it really seems to depend on where you go to school. I went to Santa Cruz High, a rather... er... unique public school. Mostly just because of the incredible liberalness of the area.
For the first 3 years, the school head of security was a communist Native American... he had a big poster of Chairman Mao on the wall of 'the people's security office', he called everyone 'comrade', and his wallet contained only 2 dollar bills and susan B anthony dollars.
Of course, they never made us recite the pledge of allegience in high school anyway, but I do remember it from elementary school.
