While "The Great Pumpkin" is terrific, and I spend hours giggling over that Halloween classic, I think the comic strip in general was pretty stale and irrelevant for the last years. You know, it's all about this big group of kids who are more or less friends and who are more or less decent kids-- there aren't any kids who are just Bad. There aren't any kids who are really unpopular-- even Charlie Brown, the quintessential "loser kid" has a bunch of friends and people he plays with-- he's the freaking pitcher for his baseball team, for crying out loud. And, well, that's just not reality anymore.
Back in the 1950's and 1960's, I suppose it was more relevant, because it clicked in with what people thought of as the neighborhood kids. But today? I doubt it.
Peanuts is a classic, but it is a classic that is set in its time. The Model T was a classic, but I wouldn't want to drive one on my commute today. |
