that COBOL is widely-used, but that still does not prevent it from being "weak, flabby, and verbose," to quote a certain compendium of lore. ;) It loses big aesthetically and lacks the general-purpose flexibility of later languages (i.e., C), but I must admit that it works fairly well in its limited applications. I dare say a good deal of its popularity comes from it being the third HLL ever to be invented.
