Well,
actually, record sales increased with the proliferation of mp3 sharing. This is due to the fact that people could easily share music they thought was cool with their friends, who then would go out and buy the cd's on the strength of the enjoyment of their listening experience with the mp3s. It's like having a radio station targetted specifically at your peer groups.. which is something the RIIA execs would *LOVE* to be able to do!
But then again, they don't want ANY music format outside of their control, which is why they lobbied and bullied and eventually got US Congress to effectively abollish internet radio. IMHO, piracy is NOT the primary issue here... control and paranoia is the issue.
We can only pray that some industry exec somewhere pulls his head out of his arse and realizes that they are killing the golden goose in their zeel and angst.
Soon, it will be illegal to listen to music in any venue where others might illegally enjoy hearing it without paying for the right to use it. Dance clubs would become like speak-easy's of the prohibition era, and DJ's would become the Al Capone's and Scarface's of the Gangsta's :^p |
