It is just a way of compressing music, it is that simple. Re-distrubuting other people's recordings for profiy is piracy whatever format you use (pirate cassettes were around for years). This is wrong. Fair use - making a copy for the car, or your iPod, or whatever - is a different matter. I object to the concept of M$ style "licensing" of music.

mp3 is a useful format becuase if lets people cheaply archive, makes digital broadcast viable and facilitated digital recording media. Where the music industry loses is out is becuase it lets people distribute their own music without the need for record companies. I am damned sure that CD sales haven't dropped becuase of people downloading - more likely becuase the record companies are producing such dross atm.
