For various reasons I've never played either game, but am (or have been) a fan of both. The main gripe I have against American FB as a spectator sport is the lack of continuity (this applies to Rugby League as well, BTW, although less so). In Rugby Union the play is continuous (or nearly) apart from half-time and I find the constant breaks in play in AmFB to be deeply annoying. Also, and I know that's how it is, I find the idea of fielding a completely different team depending on whether you're going forward or backward strange... IMO Rugby players work harder, are more 'complete' athletes (whatever that means) and the game itself is more fun to watch. BTW (as a Bath fan) I can also say that there are occasional interesting cross-overs between the sports. Dan Lyle (Bath #8) played Quarter-back at high school and college. His overarm pass along the line is something to see!
