sketcher's sound bug repost... i mean... report by sketcher 2002-07-24 05:14:50
(see yesterday's original posting for the links, i would do em but i have to get to work)

the goods:
its small, ultra portable, and effective for using in place of headphones or an actual speaker when you are making a presentation to a large audiance, uses 3 triple a batteries and it goes into a sleep mode when there is no sound, if you buy another sound bug you can plug it into the first one and have stereo

the good sounds:
orchestral stuff, instrumental, vocal, opera, light sounding techno (well, stuff with more keyboard than guitar), acoustic guitars and electric guitars sound decent unless their sound has been changed to sound heavier (like metal or hard rock), mellow stuff like pink floyd (unless it gets hard)

the bads:
the sound distorts and crackles when you play it too loudly, the high vol setting is worthless (they shoulda just put a small volume knob or wheel on here), the sucker part sometimes will pop out sort of, the suction cup isnt all that good after a few minutes of being suctioned on something, the cap for the suction cup is difficult to put on, and it would be really nice to have some sort of clamp or something so that you can wind the cord around the device while it is in your pocket

the bad sounds:
mostly heavy metal or hard rock... anything with leather and spikes will sound bad (sigh... :( )

like i said, the sound gets crackly when you put the volume too high, i think if they improved on the suction cup (maybe if it was a bit larger or more concave it would work better), i think they tried to make this thing more portable than functional

but its damn cool- the cons outweigh the pros, and i cant play my favorite cd's with cd quality sound, but you have to admit that sticking this thing on a wood floor, window, file cabinet, desk, table, refridgerator door, jewel case, picture frame, penguin mint tin, etc... and having a functional speaker that goes up to 75 decibles is damn awesome

i would reccomend that you buy this if you are into audio equipment or if you use a portable cd player a lot, or if you just have about $45-50 usd to burn

on the cool geek gadget scale this gets a 9 out of 10

now you can be the vogon who delivers the message to earth
you can buy this at thinkgeek.com, or fry's (i couldnt find it on their site(but their site sucks, so whatever))
i purchased mine at fry's for a better price than thinkgeek
