First you need a bootable linux disk. I personally just use my bare.s boot disk and color.gz root disk from my slack installs. (Yeah, I know, the disks are obsolete for install purpouses, but for rooting a box, they work fine)
Put teh boot disk in, boot the computer. It'll tell you when to insert the root disk.. Some boot disks don't require this. But I happen to have a pile of boot and root disks around and I'm too lazy to make a simple boot disk..
Then login as root.
Mount the linux partiion in /mnt, and use vi to edit the file /etc/shadow-. You'll want to copy the entry that root has being careful not to ue any extra keys that you don't have to. Vi is tricky to use too, so learn how to use it first :P
The new copy of hte root entry should be void the passwor. You can't miss what section that is :P Looks somewhat like this: .3#$@fgdsfgFDGDFSGgfdgSDGFDSG43652FDSG43tggm_.
save the file, sync a few times for te sake of it, and reboot. Pull hte disk out before the mahcine tries to boot from it...
Then when you get the password prompt, type in root. On some systems, it'll automagically give you a command line! Other systems you'll actually have to hit enter when it reads "Password:".
But, like I say, it requires physical access ot the box. Any good tech, once getting done with their install and setup and everything, should be removing the floppy drive, video card, and keybaord from any such SERVERS that need to be secure like that. Then they should be mounted in a rack that has a lockable door, and placed in a room with motion detectors and a locked door. The entrances ot htebuilding should also be locked, and lobbies should have motion detectors as well...
Schools around here go the extra mile and put nice 3/4" square stock up and down from the cieling, with a big iron door, around the server. Kinda funny, since I think they're still using the state of hte art 233Mhz gateways *snicker*
A friend of mine goes way far and has a program setup on all his boxen. They all constantly ping each other with tiny packets at various intervals of time. If one machine fails to ping, his pager is sent a message as to which machine didn't get it. If it fails 3 times ina row, 911 is dialed and an audio tape played back over and over again, as well as paging his pager again..
Pretty nfty setup. I bet I could build one like that if I sat down and thought about it long enough.
