That usually solves filesystem type problems like that.

VERY useful when hacking the root password on a box after someone forgets it! :P

If you don't sync, all your changes to /etc/shadow- aren't written, so you're still left with an old password. Heh :P

There's me, spouting out how to root a box... luckly the condition is having physical access to the box :D
