Virtually instant 3rd degree burns by Nea 2006-11-19 12:55:59
certainly could have happened according to the people I've talked to in the past. And this afternoon I found this link that says "An approximate one-second exposure to 160°F water will result in third degree burns. Where the water is 130°F, an approximate half-minute exposure will result in third degree burns."

Just now I went googling. The CDC says "It takes 2 seconds for a child to receive third degree burns from water at 150 degrees. It takes 5 seconds if the water is at 140 degrees, and 30 seconds at 130 degrees."

qotdsubmit at this domain>Another site says "At this temperature [120°F], it takes 10 minutes of exposure to cause full thickness burns in adult skin; at 125°F (52°C), the corresponding time is 2 minutes; at 130°F (54°C) the time is 30 seconds. Exposure to a water temperature of 140°F (60°C) for only three seconds can result in third degree burns that would require hospitalization and skin grafts"

McDonald's sold its coffee even hotter than these numbers, at 180 to 190°F.
